What is Life Coaching?

Life coaching is a practice of helping clients determine and achieve personal goals. A coach uses multiple methods to help clients with the process of setting and reaching goals. Coaching is not targeted at psychological illness, and coaches are not therapists or consultants.

How does Life Coaching work?

A Life Coach usually works with you over the phone, often in weekly sessions, to partner with you in identifying what you want, finding your goals and dreams, encouraging you to take action, and helping you achieve success.  Success means living with integrity, doing work/activities that you love, having great health, creating financial freedom, happiness and loving relationships.  Whether you want help achieving a specific goal, finding a career direction, or improving your life in general, a Life Coach can help you get there faster.

How is Life Coaching different from counseling?

A therapist or counselor will often explore emotional issues and your past or help you cope with a crisis. If a client is in emotional pain, then it may be best to consult a therapist or counselor. A life coach works with you to improve your present situation, help you define goals for yourself, enhance the quality of your life, and create new possibilities for the future.

What methods does a life coach use to help me?

The life coach applies exceptional listening skills, mentoring, values assessment, behavior modification, behavior modeling, goal-setting, and other techniques in assisting clients.

One special technique that I have been trained in and use often to get rapid changes with my clients is called neuro-linguistic programming. This is a technique that where I ask specific questions to help define the message that I am trying to communicate. Then, by listening closely to your answers, we can uncover limiting beliefs that may be stopping you from reaching your full potential. We can then provide you with new suggestions for thinking patterns and positive beliefs that can make profound changes in your growth, potential, and your life!

What should I look for in a coach?

The great thing about life coaching that sets it apart from other professions; clients and coaches can be located anywhere! The telephone makes it very convenient for both you and your coach to contact each other and to have sessions any time of the day.
There are approximately 2,000 professional coaches now practicing full time in the United States, according to Sandy Vilas, president of Coach University, which is based in Houston, Texas.

The main things to focus on when hiring a coach is to ask about training and the types of people they work with. Before you settle on a coach, make sure the chemistry is right. Make sure that you feel comfortable with the coach. They should usually give you a free phone consultation and so that you can get to know them and their style of coaching before you hire them.

How many life coaching sessions will it take to resolve my issues?

It depends on the issues that we are dealing with. Typically the first session deals with us getting to know each other and defining the areas of life that you want to focus on and what you want to get out of the sessions.
After the initial session, the schedule is up to you. You can schedule sessions once a week, twice a month, or even once a month depending on how often you feel you need to touch base and have a coach guide you toward your goals.

After each session, you will have homework to work on before the next session in order to get the progress moving between sessions. Then, we will discuss how you are progressing each time we meet.    

How much does it cost?

Typically sessions are blocked in 1 hour or 30 minute increments. If you need longer, the fees will be adjusted accordingly.
